VietNamNet Bridge – Many young people have stopped thinking of tattoos as reserved for eccentric artists and gangsters and go to Tattoo Club Vietnam to express themselves; body art can cost anywhere from VND300,000 to several millions.
“Tattoos are no longer in a negative light, like in the past, so I want to commemorate my first love by getting one. Perhaps my girlfriend will also like it,” said Hung, a customer at Tattoo Club Vietnam.
Located in a small, deep lane near the Hanoi National Economics University, Tattoo Club serves maximum of two customers per day only.
The club offers a wide variety of designs, ranging from simple roses and hearts to the more complicated, dragons (the symbol of power and strength), spiders (symbol of meditation), phoenix (symbol of hero), and also create based on customers’ requests and ideas.
According to the club’s manager, customers include students, intellectuals, manual laborers, artists and foreigners.
Men often choose football team logos, patterns or their favorite footballers, while foreigners love Dong Son bronze drums or a Vietnamese flag.
Dung, a barber in Hanoi, said after several days thinking about what to get, decided on a lion tattoo on his shoulder, this cost him several million VND.
“Vietnamese people often think tattoos are a symbol of gangsters, but it is acceptable and popular abroad,” Dung said.
Tattoo Club Vietnam was opened in 2005 by Tran Chi Hieu. It is known to use the most modern tattoo techniques and equipment in Hanoi. Hieu periodically sends his staff to Thailand for further education.
However, the club refuses to serve people under 18. “They are too young and are not mature enough to be sure and tattoos are very difficult to remove,” Tuan, a staff at Tattoo Club Vietnam explained.
