Compensation, motorbikes help poor get poorer in central Vietnam
People in a poor central Vietnam commune combined their savings with recent government compensation and bought motorbikes but now have no money left for food, water or electricity. After Ma Cooih Commune residents in Quang Nam province received financial compensation and were relocated to make room for the A Vuong Hydroelectric Plant Project, they quickly spent the money on around 150 motorbikes they could never have afforded.
According to the head of the Ma Cooih People’s Committee Alang Bang, motorbikes are considered a sign of wealth in the poverty-stricken commune.
But after the people of Ma Cooih spent all they had on the bikes, they were rarely able to use them as they didn’t have enough money to buy gasoline.
After showing off the bikes for several months, many families are now asking for urgent relief as they lack life’s basic provisions.
Additionally, most of the new bike owners have yet to obtain driving licenses, said Bang.
