Papua New Guinea: Scores missing after ferry sinks
Three life rafts from the MV Rabaul Queen are seen floating above the sunken hull of a ferry in the open waters of Papua New Guinea Many of those on board have already been rescued, some with life rafts

More than 100 people are missing after a ferry with up to 350 on board sank off Papua New Guinea's northern coast, officials say.

At least 230 people have been rescued in a joint Australian-PNG operation.

The MV Rabaul Queen sank east of Lae, the South Pacific country's second-largest city, some 10 miles (16km) from shore.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said everything would be done to establish the cause of the accident.

"We will leave no stone unturned," he said.

"We cannot afford to continue to lose our people's lives. Sea transport is one of the most important forms of transportation in the country."

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard: ''This is obviously a major tragedy''

Australia PM Julia Gillard earlier said the incident was a "major tragedy" and that the authorities were urgently trying to find out if any Australians were on board.

An Australian maritime safety authority spokeswoman said that so far 238 survivors had been rescued.

Capt Nurur Rahman, from the National Maritime Safety Authority, said he was hopeful of finding more people alive in the tropical waters.

"People have survived for up to two days,'' he told the Associated Press news agency.

He added that the number of people who were on board may be lower than previously reported - at about 300.

The MV Rabaul Queen, operated by PNG company Star Ships, was travelling between the towns of Kimbe and Lae when it sent out a distress signal in early on Thursday.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which is assisting the country's authorities, has confirmed that the vessel sank approximately 16km (9.9 miles) off Finschhafen.

Eight ships and three helicopters assisted in the rescue efforts and three Australian fixed-wing aircraft were also sent, says the BBC's Duncan Kennedy in Sydney.

A Star Ships spokesman told AFP news agency that "bad weather" was believed to have sunk the ship.

Star Ships is one of Papua New Guinea's biggest ship operators.

"It is true that Americans tend to think of Vietnam as the Vietnam War, which is unfortunate," Thi-Nga said. "I'd like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the American families and American soldiers who came to Vietnam to help save Vietnam."

Ung Thi (14 October 1913 - 10 February 2001) was a prominent Vietnamese business man who, together with his wife Nguyen Thi Nguyet Nga, built and operated the Rex Hotel and Cinema in Ho Chi Minh City.[1] After the Fall of Saigon, Ung Thi sought refuge in France where he lived until his death.

    Early life

Ung Thi was born Nguyễn Phúc Ung Thi into the Nguyễn Dynasty, the last ruling monarchy of Vietnam. His grandfather was the renowned poet Tung Thien Vuong. His father, Hong Khang, founded the Lac Tinh Vien in Huế, classified as world heritage site by UNESCO.

In World War II, he voluntarily enlisted into the army and served alongside Duong Van Minh in Savannakhet, Laos. He gained his law degree and worked as administrator for the Compagnie des Chemin de Fer in Hanoi. He was subsequently appointed as chief aide to the French Resident Superieur in Hanoi.

In 1946, Ung Thi married Nguyen Thi Nguyet Nga, great-granddaughter of Hoang Cao Khai, Viceroy of Tonkin, and had seven children.
    Rex Hotel and Cinema

Ung Thi and his family moved from Hanoi to Saigon in 1954, following the Geneva Convention. He built and operated the Dai Nam Cinema. In his daily commute, he passed in front of the Bainier Auto Center, in the heart of the city and was interested to acquire this prime location but it was not for sale.

One day in 1961, Ung Thi took his daughter to tea and learned that the Bainier property might be on sale. He purchased the lot and built the Rex Hotel and Cinema. The building was modern for its time and featured a large screen theater and the first escalator in Vietnam[2]. It was the leading hotel and cinema in Vietnam.

During the Vietnam War, the hotel was rented to the United States Information Agency, where it became a center of activity for military leaders and international journalists[3]. In 1972, Ung Thi renovated the property and added two mini theaters, a coffee shop, a shopping mall and dance hall.

In early 1975, Ung Thi's wife went to Europe to source for interior design supplies and could not return because of the advance of the Viet Cong. After the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, Ung Thi had to surrender under duress his properties to the Government. In 1976, Ung Thi joined his wife and children in France.
